Pinion Point Plantation, Quitman, GA

We were excited to have 6 kids compete in our 1st Annual John Abbott Youth Trial Walking Stake. This was a first-time experience for all of these kids to handle a bird dog. Our judges, who graciously gave their time to watch the dogs and young handlers, were Chris Mathan, of Pavo, GA and Carli McFalls, of Quitman, GA. Manager of Pinewoods Plantation and president of Pinewoods BDC, Jeff Arnold, also walked along giving tips and guiding the kids. Thank you to Bernard Parker of Four Oaks Plantation and Chip Jenkins for helping out on foot as well. It was thrilling to watch the dogs work so close by and to see the excitement and encouragement for all the kids. We thanks National Bird Hunters Association (NBHA) for their support of the trial and, in particular, this first walking youth stake!

We had 3 braces that took place immediately following the horseback stake. The first brace was Kayson Thompson with “Jag”, who was our 1st place winner, and Rolin Royce with “Peggy” who took home 2nd place. Jag had 3 beautiful finds for his young handler in his 15 minutes on the ground. Peggy ran a clean race and put herself in 2nd place with 2 backs.

Our 2nd brace was Matthew Holden with “Ike” and Makenzi Bach with “Ben”. Ike and Ben honored each other for their two finds. They handled well and gave the first-timers some valuable knowledge about bird dogs.

Our 3rd and final brace of the day was our 3rd place winner, Madison Vinzant with “Chase”, and Jalon Stover with “Boyd”. Chase had 1 classy find with birds flushed by Madison. Boyd had a nice race and stayed close to his young handler.

It was a great afternoon for these young kids that hopefully made a lasting impression. We hope to see them again at our next youth trial in the Fall.
