CT Youth Field Trial and Hunting Dog Org. June Trial Report

Jun 28th, 2025 | Results & Reports

Held on the beautiful grounds of the well renowned Markover Kennels and Hunting Preserve, it was a scorching day of fun and hard work had by all. With 18 children in attendance, we had the numbers for a busy day. The youth ranged from 3-14 yrs old…from absolute beginner to more experienced bird dog junior handlers.

With learning being an important component to our mission, we began the day with a training demo by our host and founder Kaitlyn on basic canine safety, handling and the benefits of obstacle training and obedience prep off the field. Demos then followed by our experienced veteran judges Brian Dix, Tim Cavanaugh and Rob Hopkins. The three teamed up to go over the basics of the 3 different stakes that we’d offered: Puppy, Derby and Shooting/Gun Dog.

Following the demos we held a “Mini Youth” Obstacle Challenge competition for all kids under 5 yrs old, each demonstrating basic obedience with their pup and help from a parent. Earning them a ribbon and a goodie bag. They were thrilled and adorable!

The youth trial portion began immediately after with 15 min. braces around a short course, based off of age and experience. Some youth handlers brought their own dogs, some borrowed a dog from our professionals with extras on site.

Each child was allowed to have a family member nearby the judges and the judges helped each child through their brace as needed. We encouraged the children to work as independently as possible with parents only stepping in if necessary. This allowed the children to really step into their confidence and just roll with it! The results were miraculous, in very challenging conditions, mind you, with the higher temperatures. We had no complaints from children regarding the heat or the course length or any of the above. Each child was positive, motivated and ready to work, in all age groups.

The comments from the parents and observers were filled with pride. It was truly a day for kids to shine and enjoy their time out in the outdoors with the dogs they love.

We made a point to ensure that FUN proceeded the work with water games, a swim, water balloons and prizes! The children got to just be kids with their new friends out in the woods under the trees in the shade. Laughing, reminiscing, tired little feet and happy hearts.

Our sponsors made it all possible and my fantastic team of volunteers. It was absolutely a group effort and we pulled it off without a hitch. A day to remember for all who attended. We’re thankful for the faith and support of all the parents of these great kids.

Our next trial is 9/13/25 and we hope to have even more youth and volunteers join us!

Note: YFTA congratulates Kaitlyn Judd and her team of volunteers including field trialers Brian Dix, Tim Cavanaugh and Rob Hopkins who offered to judge and help the kids run their dogs. We’re thrilled to see youth field trials expand to Region 1. YFTA supported the event through the payment of Markover Kennels and Hunting Preserve for the use of their beautiful venue.
