2024 Minnesota Grouse Dog Assoc. Youth Stake

Jun 6th, 2024 | FT Results and Reports

Our spring quail trial was held on May 18 – 19 on the Four Brooks WMA, about 10 miles north of Milaca, MN. A highlight of this trial is the Youth Event where our club members’ children get an opportunity to handle dogs around a small course with birds planted in launchers. Some of the kids do all the handling of the dogs, flush birds and shoot their blank pistol while others rely on a little help from their adult helpers or “scouts”. This is a no pressure stake that focuses on fun and learning.

This trial serves as our family event of the year since most spouses and children aren’t super drawn to the idea of huddling in the often chilly and wet conditions on the side of the road in various state forests (and might even think we are a little crazy for enjoying it ourselves)…conditions often experienced during our fall trials and championship. The weather is usually beautiful this time of year and the kids have a ton of fun playing around the grounds amidst all the trial activities. This annual youth stake (and the prizes!) really clinches their attendance!

So it’s certainly a very important event that we intend to keep as a yearly tradition. We are especially able to do so because of our sponsors who donate birds and prizes.

This year we want to thank Youth Field Trial Alliance for their donation for the purchase of birds. Chad Bloom and Ruffed Grouse Society & American Woodcock Society, Jeremy Moore and Dog Bone Hunter, and Ben Brettigen and onX Hunt supplied the prizes!

This year 17 children of various ages competed in the youth stake. They had a blast as can be seen in the many wonderful photos below by club members Ben Brettigen and Ben McKean. Thanks to everyone who participated and helped out. Go Minnesota bird doggers!
